Updating the plans entails inventory, forecasts, facility requirements, plan concepts, plan drawing, financial plan, capital improvement plans, passenger and cargo market and business and strategic planning. To ensure FAA compliance, the airport air space, radar coverage, approaches,  minimums  and other safety issues are being examined, modified or updated as needed.  In addition, the study is evaluating both the GPS and ILS systems to improve safety and airport design standards. The airport recently received CAA (corporate aircraft association) certification.

Activities at the Southeast Colorado Regional Airport include: Annual Planes to Plains Fly-In, parachuting and skydiving events and Women's Classic Air Race. On occasion, the military utilizes the airport for training purposes.
