Adopt Me… FREE!

A blue graphic with text "I ADOPTED A FRIEND," paw prints, and a stylized cat silhouette, crediting the "Stanley Trust" and "Lamar Animal Shelter."

(September, 2024) Thanks to The Stanley Trust most costs to adopt your furever friend are covered until grant funds are exhausted. These costs include the City’s adoption fee, an “adoption kit” that includes a collar, leash, shampoo, grooming kit, first bag of dog food, and a drawstring bag to put everything in.

The Stanley Trust is also investing in Lamar's future dog park at the North Gateway Park.

The Lamar Police Department grants also cover implanting a 24PetWatch microchip in your adopted dog, so your new BFF can be returned if lost or stolen.

The Lamar Animal Shelter is operated by the Lamar Police Department. Currently we only care for dogs, however we work closely with many other agencies to assist with other species of animals when possible. Our code enforcement officers are responsible for bringing in most of the stray dogs we receive, and we also accept owner surrenders from Lamar residents.

Dogs that are brought in as stray must be held for six days to give the owner time to reclaim them. If the dog is not claimed, they are spayed/neutered and generally made available for adoption.

We work hard to find a place for all the dogs that come through our shelter, whether that be adoption or transfer to another shelter or rescue better suited to meet their needs. We do not euthanize for space/time constraints, however we do practice humane euthanasia for animals that have health or behavior problems that would make them too dangerous or unhealthy to responsibly re-home or transfer.

We strongly believe in and abide by the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, as set forth by the Asilomar Accords.

  1. Freedom – from hunger and thirst
  2. Freedom – from discomfort
  3. Freedom – from pain, injury, or disease
  4. Freedom – to express normal behavior
  5. Freedom – from fear and distress

The Lamar Animal Shelter is supported by the City of Lamar, grants, and generous support from the Community.

Every Penny Makes A Difference.

We help lost, homeless and abandoned animals return to their homes or find new ones. Could you help us?

We are passionate about caring for the dogs in our care, whether temporarily waiting to be returned to their owner after becoming lost or housing them as we find them their perfect "furever" home.

You can help us reach our goal of giving the dogs in our shelter the quality care they deserve by donating. We accept donations via cash or check. Cash donations help pay for any veterinary care dogs need while in our care. You may also browse our Amazon WishList to see specific items we need most. Commonly needed items include canned and dry food, treats, toys, leashes, harnesses, and brushes.

We are grateful to the Stanley Trust for its recent contributions to the City to reduce adoption costs and provide adoption kits to worthy families as well as assistance to build the City's dogpark at North Gateway Ponds.

Volunteer

Volunteering is one of the best ways to help animals in need! Volunteers help with essential tasks to keep the shelter up and running, including cleaning pens, walking dogs, weeding around outside enclosures, making flyers, spreading the word about shelter news, and more!

To get started email Shelter Manager.
