Monday, April 7th is World Health Day 

The Four Pillars of Healthy Living

  1. Nutrition - aim for 5 servings of fruit and vegetables per day
  2. Exercise - aim for 30 minutes of exercise per day
  3. Relaxation - aim for 10-20 minutes of deep breathing practice per day
  4. Sleep - aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night

These pillars work together to keep your mind and body healthy.

    Main Street Lamar

    Recently, Lamar Partnership Inc. /LPI rebranded itself as Main Street Lamar (MSL), so residents know the organization's focus. You can follow MSL's page on Facebook to learn more about their initiatives, upcoming events, and recycling days. MSL is a Colorado Main Street Community managed and funded by the City of Lamar. It is responsible for promoting economic opportunities and community connections in Lamar’s Main Street district. 

    Recently, Main Street Lamar used funds from a mini-grant project, along with matching funds from the City of Lamar, supported the creation and purchase of new banners for Downtown Main Street in Lamar. Local artist, Leandra Chavez, designed the banners. The City of Lamar’s Public Works Department installed the banners on the main street light poles.

    Corporate Cup is one of the main, annual events that is organized by Main Street Lamar. The 2025 Corporate Cup is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30th through Saturday, August 2nd. For more information, please visit the Main Street Lamar website.

    April Common Grounds featuring Lamar Public Library

    During Common Grounds on Wednesday morning (4/2), the Lamar Public Library Director, Sue Lathrop, discussed upcoming projects at the library including a new Shared Memories program that will help to preserve the history and culture of Southeastern Colorado through the deployment of digital memory labs. The library will share more about this program once it is in effect. Lathrop also mentioned that the Free Legal Clinic is an underutilized library service that the library. The clinic allows patrons to schedule an appointment to speak with an attorney for initial legal advice virtually at the library.     East Colorado Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Associate Director Martha Alvarez shared information, including their upcoming ribbon cutting at LCC on April 15th and the Small Business Summit scheduled for May 7th. Martha explained how the SBDC benefits small businesses and provides resources, and training to small business owners. She said that they are currently reaching out to LCC students to provide information about starting small businesses.     City of Lamar Community Clean-Up Month - Love Where You Live 

    Spring cleaning is here! The City of Lamar will have Additional Free Dump &Transfer Station Weekends throughout the month of April. Mark your calendars for April 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 26th, & 27th.  The Transfer Station and Landfill will not be open on Easter Sunday, April 20th.     During Community Clean Up Month, the City of Lamar will highlight local groups who are actively working to beautify the community during the community clean up weekends.

    How to Participate:

    • Gather your group - church group, school, club, or team and enlist by calling 719-336-2774, Monday-Fridays from 8:30 AM - 5:30 PM.
    • Choose a day or dates during the City of Lamar Community Clean Up Month.
      • April 5th, 6th, 12th, 13th, 19th, 26th & 27th
    • Select your location in & around Lamar to include neighborhoods, parks, and major streets, and other locations that accumulate debris.
    • Obtain your trash pass at the Lamar Community Building during business hours.
    • Share your participation on social media with the hashtag #lamarlovewhereyoulive and tag @cityoflamar.
    • Optional: Send photos and details about your group to info@ci.lamar.co.us to be highlighted on the City of Lamar’s social media.
    • Bring your bagged trash to the Lamar Transfer Station located at 609 Crystal Street with your trash pass.
    • Participating groups will be entered into drawings for Lamar merchandise and Lamar Chamber Luv Bucks.

    New Santa Fe Trail Signage Celebration

    Join the Bent's Fort Chapter of Santa Fe Trail as they place a new sign at the original trail site near Big Timbers on Saturday, April 5th at 11:00 AM. All are invited to attend this exciting event to celebrate the history of Lamar and Prowers County. 

    Daddy/Daughter Dance - A Night in Paris

    The Southern Plains Daddy Daughter Dance is scheduled for Saturday, April 5th from 5:30 PM-8:00 PM at the Lamar Community Building. The annual event is a benefit for the Lamar Hospice Good Grief Program. Dads and daughters can enjoy a night of fun with dinner, dancing and photos. Pre-sale tickets cost $35 per dad or $40 at the door. Please visit Southern Plains Daddy/Daughter Dance for more information about this upcoming event. 

    Bent Prowers Cattle and Horse Growers Annual Meeting

    April Health Fair Screenings at PMC

    One month per quarter, Prowers Medical Center (PMC) will be offering low-cost Health Fair Screenings ($25) every Wednesday morning from 7:00 AM-9:00 AM.  Please call 719-336-8363 to schedule your appointment, or visit PMC Health Fair for more information.

    2025 Tax Season Discount at PMC

    From February until May, Prowers Medical Center (PMC)  is offering a 20% discount when a patient's account is paid in full. To receive the tax season discount, your balance must be paid in full in one payment. This discount does not apply to CICP or Medicaid accounts. If you have any questions, please call 719-336-5574.

    The next Vitalant Blood Drive is scheduled for April 15, 2025 in the Fellowship Hall of the Lamar Christian Church from 11:30 AM-4:30 PM.
