POSITION DESCRIPTION

CLASS TITLE:  Custodian

ACCOUNTABLE TO:  Custodial Supervisor

CLASS TITLE: Building Technician I

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Safety Sensitive                                                                                          

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:

Under general supervision, performs a full range of custodial duties related to the care, cleaning, appearance, and maintenance of assigned buildings and facilities. Responsible for maintaining clean, safe, sanitary, and presentable facilities for employees and the public. Work varies and requires independent judgment within established procedures and standards.

Supports the relationship between the City of Lamar and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

PRIMARY DUTIES:

·            Perform a variety of custodial duties related to indoor and outdoor facility cleaning and maintenance.

·            Complete daily custodial duties based on priorities or scheduled activities established by supervisor.

·            Arrange rooms and facilities for meetings, events, and special activities; move and arrange furniture and equipment as needed.

·            Clean, sanitize, and deodorize restroom facilities and fixtures including sinks, urinals, toilets, partitions, and dispensers.

·            Maintain restroom supplies and replenish paper products, soap, and other consumable items.

·            Gather and empty trash; clean and sanitize waste receptacles.

·            Dust and polish furniture, fixtures, equipment, and building surfaces.

·            Wash windows, mirrors, walls, ceilings, doors, and other building surfaces.

·            Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip, and polish floors using a variety of chemicals, cleansers, and equipment.

·            Vacuum and shampoo carpets and upholstered furniture in assigned facilities.

·            Maintain custodial equipment in proper working condition.

·            Monitor custodial supply levels and report supply needs to supervisor.

·            Identify and report maintenance deficiencies, safety hazards, damaged equipment, and facility concerns.

·            Assist with facility appearance and cleanliness during special events and activities.

·            Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

·         Methods, procedures, and techniques used in custodial operations.

·         Cleaning materials, chemicals, supplies, and equipment, including proper use, storage, and safety requirements.

·         Preventive maintenance practices and routine facility inspections.

·         Safe work practices, including hazard recognition, proper lifting techniques, and use of personal protective equipment.

·         Operation and care of custodial equipment, hand tools, and other relevant custodial equipment.

·         Inventory control practices for custodial supplies.

ABILITY TO:

·         Perform custodial duties and basic maintenance activities with minimal supervision.

·         Identify facility deficiencies and report maintenance issues appropriately.

·         Operation and care of custodial equipment, hand tools, and other relevant custodial equipment.

·         Maintain accurate logs, inspection records, and work documentation.

·         Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, supervisors, and contractors.

·         Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

·         Follow written and verbal instructions and adapt to changing priorities.

·         Assist with other projects as assigned.

·         Work independently or as part of a team while maintaining a high level of productivity and workmanship.

·         Maintain a professional appearance and customer-oriented attitude while representing the city.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:   Position requires physical involvement; involves walking, standing, lifting, carrying, climbing, and performing custodial and maintenance activities at various City facilities and assigned work sites. Work involves exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, undesirable weather conditions, and potentially hazardous environments. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) shall be utilized where required to minimize risk of injury. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

·         Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds occasionally and up to 25 to 50 pounds frequently, and/or exert 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and perform assigned duties.

·         Frequently stoops, kneels, crouches, bends, crawls, climbs, and reaches overhead.

·         Work involves standing and walking for extended periods of time while performing custodial activities.

·         Requires repetitive use of hands, fingers, wrists, and arms.

·         Ability to operate custodial equipment, some tools, ladders, and City vehicles safely and effectively.

·         Requires exposure to dust, odors, cleaning chemicals, various materials, and varying weather conditions.

·         Must be able to see adequately to operate equipment, perform maintenance activities, and distinguish between colors and equipment indicators.

·         Must be able to hear and communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and over two-way radio systems.

SUPERVISION – RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:  None. 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in custodial operations; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:   Possession of a valid Colorado Driver’s License. 

Preferred Qualifications:  Training or experience in HVAC filter maintenance, basic plumbing, basic electrical repair, carpentry, painting, preventive maintenance, or related facility maintenance activities.

Additional Information:

·         This position is considered a safety sensitive position because the individual performs safety-sensitive functions on a daily basis.

·         Adjust to potentially flexible work schedules including overtime and weekend assignments.

·         Notify supervisor in advance of shift starting if unable to work.

·         Must have reliable transportation to get to work each and every day.

·         Follow all City and safety rules during performance of duties.

·         Attend required safety and technical training programs.

·         Maintain customer-oriented work habits and a professional appearance.

·         Assist with emergency facility response activities as assigned.
