Two seasonal, non-exempt full-time positions available.  These seasonal positions usually are employed May - October with no more than 1040 hours total. 

Starting Compensation: $15.16/hour

POSITION DESCRIPTION

CLASS TITLE:  SEASONAL WORKER

ACCOUNTABLE TO:  Lead worker, foreman, or superintendent

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:  Under constant supervision, performs a variety of general unskilled manual labor in the construction and maintenance of streets, water and sewer lines, utility plants and systems, parks, and other public facilities and in the collection and disposal of trash, garbage, brush, and other refuse.  Work varies somewhat, subject to constant close supervision; follows instructions; may make suggestions for work improvements and performs other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following representative duties. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:

  • Picks up litter and sweeps streets and alleys; assists in the construction, repair, and maintenance of plant equipment; cleans areas around plants; performs manual labor in the construction, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines, hydrants, roads, streets, alleys, parks, cemeteries, park equipment, landfills, lots, right-of-ways, buildings, and other related public facilities; trims trees and hedges; cuts weeds and removes snow; picks up refuse; repairs fences; waters grass; picks up grounds; fertilizes; paints; patches streets; cleans inlets; edges yards; raises and lowers graves; directs driver in backing trucks; may wash interior and exterior of truck body; may operate power rake, jack hammer, and air compressor; performs minor repairs to equipment, sprinklers, and water lines; performs related duties.
  • Post records of own activities; uses hand tools; contacts with others is incidental to performance of duties; performs difficult physical work requiring continuous crawling, climbing, lifting, and frequently involving extreme weights; duties require work to be performed in undesirable physical conditions.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

Position requires physical involvement; involves walking and standing; primary responsibilities for this position will take place outdoors.  Work involves exposure to noise dust, undesirable weather conditions and potentially unsafe conditions.  Proper safety equipment should be used where undesirable physical conditions and hazards exists, to prevent injury.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Must be able to lift and carry 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to see in low or bright lights and distinguish between colors.
  • Ability to adequately see to operate City equipment.
  • Must be able to hear clearly, speak clearly in person and on a two-way radio
  • Ability to write and prepare reports.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret written material and reports.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills such as adding, subtracting, multiplication and division.
  • Constant usage of fingers and both hands.
  • Work involves sitting or standing 50% of the time and walking and standing while performing various tasks 30% of the time.
  • Frequently stoops, kneels, crouches, bends, crawls, climbs, including reaching overhead.
  • Must be able to maneuver within unimproved construction and development sites.
  • Knowledge and ability to operate and maintained department equipment.

SUPERVISION – RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS:   None

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of eighth grade; some previous experience in laboring is desirable; a driver’s license may be required for some positions in this class.
