CITY OF LAMAR DEPARTMENT: PARKS AND RECREATION
CLASS TITLE: MAINTENANCE WORKER
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Foreman and/or Parks Supervisor
FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION: Under general supervision, performs a variety of general unskilled to semi-skilled work in the construction and maintenance of streets, water and sewer lines, water/wastewater plants and systems, parks, and other public facilities and in the collection and disposal of trash, garbage, brush, and other refuse.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: -- Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND PERFORMANCE:
Picks up litter and sweeps streets and alleys; assists in the construction, repair, and maintenance of plant equipment; cleans areas around plants; performs manual labor in the construction, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines, hydrants, roads, streets, alleys, parks, cemeteries, park equipment, landfills, lots, right-of-ways, airport buildings, and other related public facilities; trims trees and hedges; removes trees and transplants trees; mows grass and cuts weeds; performs snow and ice removal from parks, cemeteries, city parking lots and sidewalks around City facilities; picks up refuse; repairs fences; waters grass; maintains playground equipment for safety; picks up grounds; cleans restroom facilities; fertilizes; paints; patches streets; cleans inlets; edges yards; performs cemetery maintenance; locates grave sites; sets slabs; mows and weeds around head stones and trees; digs and covers grave sites; maintains ball fields; mows, drags and lines fields; moves tables, bleachers and stages; directs driver in backing trucks; may wash interior and exterior of truck body; may operate various types of light equipment and other trucks under 2 ½ tons, including power rake, mower, jack hammer, and air compressor; performs minor repairs to equipment, sprinklers, and water lines. Maintains effective working relationships with other City staff, vendors, funeral homes and the general public.
Post records of own activities; uses hand and power tools; responsible for equipment requiring minimal servicing; may be required to be “on call” for emergency responses. Supports the relationship between the City of Lamar and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires physical involvement; involves walking and standing; primary responsibilities for this position will take place outdoors. Work involves exposure to noise dust, undesirable weather conditions and potentially unsafe conditions. Proper safety equipment should be used where undesirable physical conditions and hazards exists, to prevent injury. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Must be able to lift and carry 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must be able to see in low or bright lights and distinguish between colors.
- Ability to adequately see to operate City equipment.
- Must be able to hear clearly, speak clearly in person and on a two-way radio
- Ability to write and prepare reports.
- Ability to read, understand, and interpret written material and reports.
- Ability to perform basic math skills such as adding, subtracting, multiplication and division.
- Constant usage of fingers and both hands.
- Work involves sitting or standing 50% of the time and walking and standing while performing various tasks 30% of the time.
- Frequently stoops, kneels, crouches, bends, crawls, climbs, including reaching overhead.
- Must be able to maneuver within unimproved construction and development sites.
- Knowledge and ability to operate and maintained department equipment.
